When Marietta Barnum was born on 21 November 1823, in Ontario, Wayne, New York, United States, her father, Rufus Roderick Barnum, was 29 and her mother, Eliza Aldrich, was 32. She married Ross Bertram Hughes on 9 January 1849, in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa, United States. She lived in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa, United States in 1850 and Des Moines, Iowa, United States in 1868. She died on 1 May 1874, at the age of 50.

The Crimes Act was made to provide a clearer punishment of certain crimes against the United States. Part of it includes: Changing the maximum sentence of imprisonment to be increased from seven to ten years and changing the maximum fine from $5,000 to $10,000.
