English: variant of Clabburn, possibly a variant of Cliburn , but the latter is a northwest English name whereas Clabburn is found mostly in Norfolk and the South East, so it is more probably from a lost place in that part of England, perhaps named with Old English clǣg ‘clay’ + burne ‘spring, stream’.
History: William Claiborne (c. 1600–77) was a founding colonist in VA. His descendant, William Charles Claiborne (1775–1817) was the first governor of LA.
