History: The progenitor of the Schoonmakers was Hendrick Jochemse(n) Schoonmaker, born 1624 in Hamburg, Germany, who arrived in New Netherland in 1653; he died 1682 in Ulster County, NY. The exact original form of his surname is not known; his parents might have been either German, or Dutch, or even Danish.
