By 1658, Sweden had become a great power in northern Europe. The Great Northern War from 1700 through 1721 resulted in the loss of land amassed by Sweden in areas such as Germany, Norway, and Denmark. Nearly 200,000 Swedes lost their lives due to the war while Sweden lost much of its dominance in the Baltic Region.
From a feminine form of Latin Christianus ( see Christina ). Queen Kristina of Sweden ( 1626–89 ) succeeded her father Gustavus Adolphus in 1632 . Growing to adulthood, she presided over a glittering court, but in 1654 she abdicated, left Sweden dressed as a man, converted to Roman Catholicism, and lived for most of the rest of her life in Rome.
