1878 · St. Mary's Episcopal Church is Built

The Episcopal Diocese of Florida organized a mission church in 1878 to provide a location that could serve seasonal guests. Visitors and residents from Green Cove Springs raised over $1000 to build the church. On March 10, 1879, the Church held its first service. This location is notable because it would eventually be added to U.S. National Register of Historic Places (February 17, 1978).

Name Meaning

Americanized form of Dutch Van Sweeringen: probably a habitational name for someone from one of two places in Germany named Schweringen, one in the Hanover region and the other near Bremen. Alternatively, an altered form of Swieringa . The surname (Van) Sweeringen is not found in the Netherlands. Compare Van Swearingen .

History: A 17th-century law-enforcement officer by the name of Gerrit van Sweeringen is recorded at New Amstel on the Delaware River.
