On June 1, 1792, Kentucky became the 15th state. It was the first state west of the Appalachian Mountains

1818 · Jackson Purchase

The western part of Kentucky purchased by Andrew Jackson from the Chickasaw Indians in 1818. It became known as the Jackson Purchase. This included land that wasn't originally part of Kentucky when it became a state.

Name Meaning

Americanized form of an unidentified German surname, possibly South German or Austrian Ettmayer or Edmaier, which is a topographic name for a farmer living near or on previously uncultivated land, from the noun Ed ‘uncultivated land’ + mayer, meyer ‘farmer’; see Meyer . Alternatively, it may be an Americanized form of North German Erdmeier, literally ‘earth farmer’.
