When Thor Sigbjornsen was born on 19 October 1833, in Søndeled, Risør, Aust-Agder, Norway, his father, Sigbjørn Toralfsen, was 50 and his mother, Inger Gregersdr, was 38. He married Inger Oline Olesen on 3 July 1859, in Horten, Vestfold, Norway. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 3 daughters. He died on 11 June 1865, at the age of 31, and was buried in Horten, Vestfold og Telemark, Norway.

Originally the name of the god of thunder in Norse mythology, Thor (Old Norse Þórr). It was not used as a personal name during the Middle Ages. The modern name is either a late 18th-century revival of the god's name or else a vernacular development of Tord .
