He married Ann Pell on 17 December 1842, in Vernon Township, Van Buren, Iowa, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 1 daughter. He lived in Union Township, Scotland, Missouri, United States in 1870 and Montana Township, Labette, Kansas, United States in 1900. He died on 3 April 1912, in Parsons, Labette, Kansas, United States, at the age of 89.
