He married Barbara Alder on 23 January 1749, in Herisau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 12 January 1794, at the age of 72, and was buried in Herisau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland.
