When Mateaki Helu was born on 31 July 1946, in Pangai, Ha'apai, Tonga, his father, Sioeli Manitisa Helu, was 24 and his mother, Tonga Ha'apai Tupou, was 21. He married Lesieli Malolo Pulotu in Ha'apai, Tonga. They were the parents of at least 2 daughters. He died on 7 December 1983, in Ha'apai, Tonga, at the age of 37, and was buried in Pangai, Ha'apai, Tonga.
