topographic name denoting someone who lived by a patch of darnel (Middle English darnel or dernel, from Old French darnel), an annual grass (Lolium temulentum). The plant was formerly believed to produce intoxication, and hence may also have given rise to a nickname. In Britain the name is found mainly in the central and east Midlands.
