Located in the south central part of LaValle Township, on Highways 33 and 58, the village of LaValle got its name from the French term for "the valley". Native Americans were the first to discover the lands surrounding the confluence of the Big and Little Baraboo Rivers, and established a settlement there. It was purported to be a rendezvous for the Ho Chunk from the Upper Baraboo Valley. The first settlers arrived around 1849, drawn by the potential for good water power. J.F. Hamlin, saw that potential, and purchased the land upon which the village of LaValle would eventually stand. Hamlin, and a partner, Solon Rushmore, began construction of a dam and sawmill in 1849, with equipment being installed the following spring. The first lumber turned out by the mill went to construct a home for Hamlin.
Although divided as a state on the subject of slavery, Ohio participated in the Civil War on the Union's side, providing over 300,000 troops. Ohio provided the 3rd largest number of troops by any Union state.

History: Among the earliest bearers of the name in North America was Samuel Mathews (c. 1600–c. 1657), who came to VA from London c. 1618. He established a plantation at the mouth of the Warwick River, which was at first called Mathews Manor; later its name was changed to Denbigh. He was one of the most powerful and influential men in the early affairs of the colony. He (or possibly his son, who bore the same name) was governor of the colony from 1657 until his death in 1660.
