He died on 14 June 1882, in Reynolds, Rock Island, Illinois, United States, at the age of 61, and was buried in Reynolds Cemetery, Edgington Township, Rock Island, Illinois, United States.

1825 · The Crimes Act

The Crimes Act was made to provide a clearer punishment of certain crimes against the United States. Part of it includes: Changing the maximum sentence of imprisonment to be increased from seven to ten years and changing the maximum fine from $5,000 to $10,000.

1826

The City of Rock Island was preceded by the Town of Farnhamsburg, the first settlement on this side of the river within the present City limits. Here the first house was built by Colonel Davenport and Russell Farnham, partners in the Indian trade, in 1826...Here the County Government was formed, the first elections held, and the first post office established; it was the seat of the Circuit and County Courts from 1833 to 1835.

1841

The original city plat was filed on July 10, 1835, and was named Stephenson. It was renamed Rock Island in March 1841.

Name Meaning

English (of Norman origin): occupational name for a watchman, either in a town or castle, from Anglo-Norman French waite ‘watchman, member of the watch’ (of ancient Germanic origin; compare Wachter ). In the Middle Ages the town waits typically combined the functions of watchmen and musicians through being trumpeters or pipers. There may also have been some late confusion with White or Wheat .
