    Name Meaning

Altered form of Dutch Van Ostrande, which is most likely a variant of Van Nostrand formed by misdivision of the preposition van ‘from, of’ and the placename. The surname (Van) Ostrande is not found in the Netherlands.

Swedish: probably of the same etymology as Ostrand , the addition of the suffix -er giving the appearance of a name formed with the suffix -ander, derived from Greek anēr (genitive andros) ‘man’. This surname is very rare in Sweden.

In some cases reportedly also a shortened and altered form of Swedish Sjöstrand (see Sjostrand ).
