When Nuulua Aleka Liu was born on 27 September 1919, in Letogo, Tuamasaga, Upolu, Samoa, her father, Aleka Liu Neti Wright, was 24 and her mother, Ela Faleilua, was 25. She married Faleafa Fio Matautia on 20 March 1937, in Letogo, Tuamasaga, Upolu, Samoa. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 4 daughters. She died on 15 February 1979, in her hometown, at the age of 59, and was buried in Togo.
