When Moala Toutai was born in 1904, in Hoi, Tongatapu, Tonga, his father, Kelepi Fotu 'Alusa, was 28 and his mother, Mrs 'Alusa, was 17. He married Ane Finau Veainu in 1929. He died about 1960, at the age of 57, and was buried in Tonga.
