Norwegian (Rødland): habitational name from the farm name Rødland in Agder, a derivative of Old Norse rythja ‘clear’ referring to ‘cleared land, clearing’, or the farm name Røydland, also in Agder, a compound of Old Norse reyrr ‘rush’ (a plant) and land ‘(piece of) land, farmstead’ (compare Rolland ). In some names it is hard to distinguish between the Old Norse homographs reyrr ‘rush’ (a plant) and reyrr ‘heap of stones’ as in the farm name Røydland in Rogaland. Compare also Roland .
