When Joseph Wepiha Puna was born in January 1889, in Mohaka, Wairoa, New Zealand, his father, Akuhata Te Hapua Puna, was 33 and his mother, Mere Arihi Rerepu, was 21. He married Maata Paranihia Francis Nicholson on 21 October 1912, in Napier, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. He died on 16 March 1962, in his hometown, at the age of 73, and was buried in Mohaka, Wairoa, New Zealand.

The National Council of Women of New Zealand was created as an organization after women won the right to vote.
