He married Maata Paranihia Francis Nicholson on 21 October 1912, in Napier, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. He died on 16 March 1962, in his hometown, at the age of 73, and was buried in Mohaka, Wairoa, New Zealand.
