1858 · Halle Orchestra Give First Performance

Age 1

The Hallé Orchestra named after Charles Hallé became a permanent orchestra when they played for the first time on January 30, 1858, in the Free Trade Hall. The orchestra fell on hard times in 1861 and performed only two concerts. From 1899-1911 Hans Richter directed the orchestra.

The East Lancashire Royal Engineers was a group of volunteers in a unit of Britian's Royal Engineers. They were started in Manchester in 1901. They fought on the western front during WWI and were part of the Dunkirk Evacuation during WWII.

Name Meaning

Irish (Tipperary): Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hÓgáin ‘descendant of Ógán’, a personal name from a diminutive of óg ‘young’, also meaning ‘young warrior’. In southern Ireland, some bearers claim descent from an uncle of Brian Boru, while in northern Ireland a surname of the same form was Anglicized as Hagan .
