When Gísli Jónsson was born about 1769, in Kross, Rangárvallasýsla, Southern, Iceland, his father, Jon Olafsson, was 35 and his mother, Jorunn Sigurdsdottir, was 34. He married Margrét Jónsdóttir on 1 August 1795. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. He died on 19 July 1846, in Hallgeirsey, Rangárvallasýsla, Southern, Iceland, at the age of 78.
