When Fredrick Scherrer was born on 1 January 1873, in Pembroke Township, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada, his father, August Johann Henrich Scherrer, was 32 and his mother, Sophia Schoof, was 29. He married Kathrine Ralston Tuttle on 15 February 1915, in Leonard, Cass, North Dakota, United States. He died on 22 October 1947, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, at the age of 74.

In 1883, there was a mining boom in Northern Ontario when mineral deposits were found near Sudbury. Thomas Flanagan was the blacksmith for the Canadian Pacific Railway that noticed the deposits in the river.
