When Joseph Hassam was born on 23 January 1747, in Lincoln, Maine, United States, his father, Jonathan Hassam, was 44 and his mother, Mary Bennett, was 36. He married Elizabeth Tewksbury on 13 March 1770, in Massachusetts, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 daughters. He died on 22 September 1831, at the age of 84, and was buried in Manchester, Essex, Massachusetts, United States.

English (mainly Kent): possibly a variant of Horsham, a habitational name from any of several places called Horsham (two in Devon, one in Sussex, one in Norfolk, and one in Worcestershire). The placenames derive from Old English hors ‘horse’ + hām ‘village, homestead’ or hamm ‘water meadow’.
