He married Kjistie Marie Hansdatter Bamble on 6 October 1820, in Bamble, Telemark, Norway. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Norway, Racine, Wisconsin, United States for about 10 years and Winneshiek, Iowa, United States in 1880. He died on 5 May 1892, in Ossian, Winneshiek, Iowa, United States, at the age of 92, and was buried in Ossian, Winneshiek, Iowa, United States.
