When Lt Caleb Thurston Chappel was born on 20 August 1770, in New London, Connecticut, United States, his father, Andrew Chappel, was 35 and his mother, Bathsheba Daniels, was 37. He married Charlotte Sperry about 1797, in Rensselaerville, Albany, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 5 daughters. He died in April 1834, in Richland, Ohio, United States, at the age of 63.

The capture of Fort Griswold was the final act of treason that Benedict Arnold committed. This would be a British victory. On the American side 85 were killed, 35 wounded and paroled, 28 taken prisoner, 13 escaped, and 1 twelve year old was captured and released.
