When Mona Irene Culling was born in 1891, in New Zealand, her father, Thomas Shepherd Culling, was 37 and her mother, Fanny Eliza Grey, was 26. She married Leslie Alan Spedding in 1922, in New Zealand. She died in 1965, in her hometown, at the age of 74, and was buried in Purewa Cemetery, Meadowbank, Auckland, New Zealand.
