When John Meharg was born about 1841, in Rathfriland, Drumgath, County Down, Ireland, his father, Joseph Meharg, was 25 and his mother, Ellen Robinson, was 25. He married Margaret Kernaghan in 1870, in Newry, County Down, Ireland. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 22 June 1905, in Goodna, Queensland, Australia, at the age of 65, and was buried in Stanthorpe, Queensland, Australia.
