When Gunnar Eliasson Barkeland was born in 1798, in Jelsa, Suldal, Rogaland, Norway, his father, Elias Gunnarson Nyvoll, was 22 and his mother, Ragnhild Tollefsdotter, was 26. He married Malena Olsdtr Grønnevik in 1827, in Jelsa, Rogaland, Norway. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 4 daughters. He died in 1859, in Marvik, Suldal, Rogaland, Norway, at the age of 61.

1810 · Vaccinations

Royal order issued by the King of Norway and Denmark in 1810 required everyone to have a certificate of smallpox vaccination. This was also recorded in the Church records. 33

First organized group of emigrants to leave Norway. First emigration to America began with the Sloopers who left in an undersized sloop “Restauration” sailed from Stavanger, Norway on July 4th, 1825.
