When August Toleafoa Tuiletufuga Fruean was born on 10 August 1873, in Apia, Tuamasaga, Upolu, Samoa, his father, Charles Fruean, was 28 and his mother, Mealefu Iosua Tuiletufuga, was 28. He married Leila Emil Foster on 11 July 1908, in American Samoa. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 9 daughters. He died on 16 December 1965, in his hometown, at the age of 92, and was buried in Faleula, Samoa.
