When Downing Goodwin Sr was born on 18 November 1770, in Wells, York, Maine, United States, his father, Thomas Goodwin, was 38 and his mother, Susannah Downing, was 35. He married Mary "Polly" Haley on 5 July 1792, in Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine, United States. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 6 daughters. He lived in Burton, Strafford, New Hampshire, United States in 1830 and Falmouth, Cumberland, Maine, United States in 1840. He died on 1 March 1841, in Topsham, Sagadahoc, Maine, United States, at the age of 70, and was buried in John Goodwin Cemetery, Baldwin, Cumberland, Maine, United States.
