When Hānaiali'i Keluli Kulou was born in 1846, in Maui, Kingdom of Hawaii, her father, Kulou, was 37 and her mother, Kauli Upai, was 35. She married John William Kāpule Nakoa Ka'ahanui in 1867. They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 8 daughters. She died on 4 May 1926, at the age of 80.
