When Alai'asa Samiu Umu was born about 1932, in Aoloaufou, Aoloau, Leasina, Western, American Samoa, his father, Tatupu Alaiasa Malumaleumu, was 20 and his mother, Alofa Ta'amai, was 100. He married Pepa Toluao Tuana'itau about 1880, in Tutuila, Eastern, American Samoa. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 20 February 1886, and was buried in Aoloau, Leasina, Western, American Samoa.
