He married Mary Rebecca McDonald on 22 August 1868, in Hermon, St. Lawrence, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons. He lived in Buffalo Township, Buchanan, Iowa, United States for about 20 years and Aurora, Buchanan, Iowa, United States in 1925. He registered for military service in 1861. He died on 23 January 1929, in Aurora, Keokuk, Iowa, United States, at the age of 83, and was buried in Madison Cemetery, Madison Township, Buchanan, Iowa, United States.

This Act was to restrict the power of the President removing certain office holders without approval of the Senate. It denies the President the power to remove any executive officer who had been appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate, unless the Senate approved the removal during the next full session of Congress. The Amendment was later repealed.
