When Mele Lilika Kimoana was born in 1928, in Tefisi, Vava'u, Tonga, her father, Fonua Kimoana, was 28 and her mother, 'Eseta Fei'iloakitohi Tuitufu, was 25. She married Viliami Vaiomo'unga in 1948, in Neiafu, Vava'u, Tonga. She died in March 2009, in her hometown, at the age of 81, and was buried in Tefisi, Vava'u, Tonga.

    Name Meaning

    Probably a contracted form of Meriel , but also associated with the small class of girls' names derived from birds, since it is identical in form with Old French merle ‘blackbird’ (Latin merula). The name came to public notice in the 1930s with the actress Merle Oberon ( 1911–79 , born Estelle Merle O'Brien Thompson ).
