When Viliami Vea 'Eliesa was born on 15 September 1916, in Neiafu, Vava'u, Tonga, his father, 'Eliesa Toekava, was 43 and his mother, 'Ema Lu'isa Malupo, was 38. He married 'Ainise 'Anau Tanginitopa on 23 July 1940, in Neiafu, Vava'u, Tonga. They were the parents of at least 6 sons. He died on 3 December 1994, in his hometown, at the age of 78, and was buried in Neiafu, Vava'u, Tonga.

It was introduced to Britain at the beginning of the 20th century and was popular in the early decades, notably borne by the singer Vera Lynn , ‘The Forces Sweetheart’ ( b. 1917 as Vera Welch ), but has since gone out of fashion.
