He married Martha Ann Doll on 9 January 1878, in Bourbon Township, Boone, Missouri, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Walnut Grove Township, McDonough, Illinois, United States in 1860 and Missouri, United States in 1870. He died on 20 January 1940, in Los Angeles, California, United States, at the age of 85, and was buried in Angeles Abbey Memorial Park, Compton, Los Angeles, California, United States.

1857 · 7.9 Earthquake In Fort Tejon

The Fort Tejon earthquake, on January 9, 1857, registered at 7.9, making it one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in the United States. Only two people were killed, largely due to the sparse population in the area where the earthquake occurred. As a result of the large scale shaking, the Kern River was turned upstream and fish were stranded miles from Tulare Lake as the waters were rocked so far from its banks.

Abraham Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation, declaring slaves in Confederate states to be free.

1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
