He married Cathrina Barbara Schiess on 5 August 1800, in Herisau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 6 daughters. He died on 1 April 1858, at the age of 79, and was buried in Switzerland.
