When Te Manene or Nene Puruwhero or Puru was born in 1870, in Hokianga, New Zealand, his father, Puruwhero Te Manene, was 39 and his mother, Kataraina Manning, was 27. He married Aneta Rautangi Kaio Te Uri on 3 May 1884, in Waima, Auckland, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 3 daughters. He died on 30 June 1940, in his hometown, at the age of 70, and was buried in Papua, Aitutaki, Cook Islands.
