When Waru Nene Puru was born in 1893, in Hokianga, New Zealand, his father, Te Manene or Nene Puruwhero or Puru, was 23 and his mother, Aneta Rautangi Kaio Te Uri, was 31. He married Mereana Te Ao Harris in 1916, in Hokianga, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 7 daughters. He died on 26 December 1964, in Ellerslie, Auckland, New Zealand, at the age of 71.

The National Council of Women of New Zealand was created as an organization after women won the right to vote.
