    Name Meaning

Scottish and northern Irish: Anglicized form of Scottish Gaelic Mac an Aba(dh) ‘son of the abbot’.

History: This is the name of a Scottish clan claiming descent from Abraruadh, Abbot of Glen Dochart, Perths, in the 9th century. In Scotland many monasteries were controlled by hereditary lay abbots. Abraruadh is said to have been a younger son of King Kenneth Mac Alpine (Coinneach mac Ailpein; see McAlpine ). According to another tradition, the clan founder was a lay abbot of Glen Dochart at the time of King David I (1124–53). Malcolm de Glendochart is recorded in the Ragman Rolls (1296) and was no doubt a member of this clan.
