1800 · Movement to Washington D.C.

While the growth of the new nation was exponential, the United States didn’t have permanent location to house the Government. The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years. Ultimately during the Presidency of John Adams, the Capital found a permanent home in the District of Columbia.

France sells Louisiana territories to U.S.A.

1811 · USS Revenge

On January 9, 1811, the USS Revenge hits a reef off of Watch Hill, Rhode Island. The load the ship is carrying is handed off to other ships and the USS Revenge is tied down by tow ropes. It brakes free from the ropes and later sinks. In 2011 divers find what are believed to be the remains of the ship.

Name Meaning

English (Devon): topographic name for someone who lived on the top of a hill, from Middle English coppe, Old English copp ‘summit’ (a transferred sense of copp ‘head, bowl’, cognate with modern English cup). Alternatively, a nickname for someone with a peculiarity of the head.

German: variant of Kopp and, in North America, (also) an altered form of this.
