When Níels Jónsson Hjaltalín was born in 1730, in Kjósarsýsla, Capital Region, Iceland, his father, Jon Hjaltalin Oddsson, was 43 and his mother, Metta Maria Hansdatter, was 46. He married Gudrun Eiriksdottir in 1757, in Gullbringusýsla, Southern Peninsula, Iceland. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 3 daughters. He died in 1786, at the age of 56.
