When Hans Svendsen was born on 21 May 1720, in Østfold, Norway, his father, Svend Amundsen Braaten, was 34 and his mother, Martha Sinrsen, was 26. He married Anne Gulbrandsen about 1755, in Østfold, Norway. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 3 April 1767, at the age of 46.

Law of 1736 legally established Confirmation in the Lutheran Church which led to organized education for all children. These became important records which the Pastor kept.
