Pål Olsen Morterud was born in 1763, in Sør-Odal, Hedmark, Norway as the son of Ole Knapperholen Embretsen and Ingeborg Jonsdatter. He married Marit Larsdatter Stormoen on 9 October 1791, in Sør-Odal, Hedmark, Norway. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 1 daughter. He died in 1851, in Nord-Odal, Hedmark, Norway, at the age of 88.
