When Sioeli Kivalu Latumailangi Ma'atu was born in 1834, in Hihifo, Niuatoputapu, Tonga, his father, Ngongo Ma’atu, was 26 and his mother, Tonga Ha'apai Sisitoutai, was 21. He married Siosi'ani Tae Hinenina’atelangi Latuselu on 2 March 1875, in Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu, Tonga. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 14 May 1894, in his hometown, at the age of 60, and was buried in Hihifo, Niuatoputapu, Tonga.
