When Alice Jane Scoles was born in January 1861, in Knoxville, Marion, Iowa, United States, her father, Jesse B. Scoles, was 25 and her mother, Sarah Elizabeth Summers, was 24. She married Joseph Michael Siders on 26 September 1876, in Marion, Iowa, United States. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 4 daughters. She lived in Mahaska, Iowa, United States in 1925 and Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois, United States in 1928. She died on 12 March 1928, in Rushville, Schuyler, Illinois, United States, at the age of 67, and was buried in Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Mahaska, Iowa, United States.

Illinois contributed 250,000 soldiers to the Union Army, ranking it fourth in terms of the total men fighting for a single state. Troops mainly fought in the Western side of the Appalachian Mountains, but a few regiments played important roles in the East side. Several thousand Illinoisians died during the war. No major battles were fought in the state, although several towns became sites for important supply depots and navy yards. Not everyone in the state supported the war and there were calls for secession in Southern Illinois several residents. However, the movement for secession soon died after the proposal was blocked.
The Burtis Opera House opened in Davenport and could easily hold an audience of 1,600. It was a widely used facility and Mark Twain filled the house when he spoke on tour in 1869. It was also used to house Susan B. Anthony when she lectured on the woman's right to vote. The Quad City Symphony Orchestra played its first concert as the new Tri-City Symphony in the Opera House. An arsonist set fire to the building on the evening of April 26, 1921, and the building was severely destroyed. The building was rebuilt but was no longer used as an opera house.
Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
