Uata Mafi was born on 31 October 1927, in Ha'alaufuli, Vava'u, Tonga as the son of Tevita Mafi and 'Anasiale Mafi. He married Ana Matafahi in 1948. He died on 13 September 1973, at the age of 45.

    Iranian: probably from a shortened form of the personal name Moafi, based on the Persian word (of Arabic origin) muʻāfī ‘privilege, exemption’, also ‘forgiveness’ (compare 3 below).

    Bangladeshi: from the personal name Mafi, based on maf ‘to forgive’, a Bengali word of Persian origin (see 2 above).
