When Karl August Mertens was born on 3 July 1852, in Schinne, Stendal, Province of Saxony, Prussia, his father, Joachim Friedrich Mertens, was 30 and his mother, Christine Friederike Weber, was 34. He married Marie Emilie H. Hansen on 28 January 1885. He died on 14 July 1927, in Rahlstedt, Hamburg-Wandsbek, Wandsbek, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, at the age of 75.
