Nathaniel Bixby was born on 2 June 1794, in Reading, Windsor, Vermont, United States as the son of Ephraim Bixby and Martha Barker. He married Mary Walker on 21 August 1820, in Cheshire, New Hampshire, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons. He lived in Acworth, Sullivan, New Hampshire, United States for about 20 years and New Hampshire, United States in 1870.

1800 · Movement to Washington D.C.

While the growth of the new nation was exponential, the United States didn’t have permanent location to house the Government. The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years. Ultimately during the Presidency of John Adams, the Capital found a permanent home in the District of Columbia.

1808 · Concord Becomes the Capital

In 1808, Concord became the capital of New Hampshire. It was originally the Penacook Plantation given to the state by the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 

1825 · The Crimes Act

The Crimes Act was made to provide a clearer punishment of certain crimes against the United States. Part of it includes: Changing the maximum sentence of imprisonment to be increased from seven to ten years and changing the maximum fine from $5,000 to $10,000.

Name Meaning

English (Suffolk and Essex): habitational name, perhaps from Bittesby in Leicestershire. The village was depopulated in 1494 to make way for sheep pastures. The pronunciation of the surname as Bekysby (1459) and Bixby (1539) would have arisen when bearers of the name migrated away from Leicestershire. Alternatively, Bixby might be an altered form of Bigby or Bixley, a Suffolk name.
