He married Frantiska Kvapil on 26 February 1878, in Toledo, Tama, Iowa, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 10 daughters. He lived in Tama, Iowa, United States in 1895. He died on 28 July 1911, in York Township, Tama, Iowa, United States, at the age of 56, and was buried in National Cemetery, Vining, Tama, Iowa, United States.

The Capitol was located in Iowa City until the 1st General Assembly of Iowa recognized that the Capitol should be moved farther west than Iowa City.
