When Dr. George Washington Stout was born on 7 February 1858, in Illinois, United States, his father, Jacob Meyer Stout, was 41 and his mother, Julianna “Julian” Henderson, was 39. He married Lorena Bertha Harris on 12 June 1904, in Mendocino, California, United States. He lived in White Hall, Greene, Illinois, United States in 1870 and Ukiah, Mendocino, California, United States for about 10 years. He died on 19 March 1928, at the age of 70.

1861 · Simple life to Soldiers

Illinois contributed 250,000 soldiers to the Union Army, ranking it fourth in terms of the total men fighting for a single state. Troops mainly fought in the Western side of the Appalachian Mountains, but a few regiments played important roles in the East side. Several thousand Illinoisians died during the war. No major battles were fought in the state, although several towns became sites for important supply depots and navy yards. Not everyone in the state supported the war and there were calls for secession in Southern Illinois several residents. However, the movement for secession soon died after the proposal was blocked.

Abraham Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation, declaring slaves in Confederate states to be free.

1877 · The First Workers Strike

The country was in great economic distress in mid-1877, which caused many workers of the Railroad to come together and began the first national strike in the United States. Crowds gathered in Chicago in extreme number to be a part of the strike which was later named the Great Railroad Strike. Shortly after the strike began, the battle was fought between the authorities and many of the strikers. The conflict escalated to violence and quickly each side turned bloody.
